The Best Things in the World Today
It's a good Monday! What's the best news from your weekend? I know we don't do depressing around here so haven't been mentioning the ash cloud, the oil spill or the earthquake situations on purpose. However, good news at least about the damaged oil pipe: BP is optimistic about their latest attempt to block the leak, saying that so far it's working extremely well and calls it "a positive step forward."
The best story this week so far is about sixteen-year-old Jessica Watson who sailed for 210 days around the world. Amazing! She was welcomed back into Australia's Sydney Harbour by cheering crowds and hundreds of boats. CNN quotes her as saying, "I'm an ordinary girl who believed in her dream."
Speaking of dreams, there's some other great people overcoming the odds to achieve a personal victory:
A teacher in an ordinary school came up with the idea of a running track to enable a visually-impaired student to race.
One woman overcame a divorce, homelessness and a hospital stay to get back on her feet and is now graduating from university alongside her daughter.
At 94 years old, Hazel Soares could be the world's second oldest person to receive a college degree. In an article from the Associated Press, she says, "It's taken me quite a long time because I've had a busy life."
In business-related news, we have a creative student from Cal Poly who last year started a business called iCracked that repairs iPhones, a couple who quit their day jobs to deliver cupcakes, an entrepreneurial competition called Make Your Mark for a Tenner that challenged students to build a successful business with just £10 (these kids are seriously the next generation of business people!).
And in Good-People-Doing-Good-Things news, a church built a brand-new home for a family and a community rolls up its sleeves to grow fresh food for people in need. I love the idea of wheelchair-accessible garden beds - even people who can't get around as easily can pitch in to help!
